Based on the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) monthly arrivals table published on 21 October 2026. Checked on 26 October 2026 (IST).
India is one of the few markets still growing for Japan this year. JNTO’s latest table puts September 2026 arrivals from India at an estimated 27,600, up 8.7% on September 2025 (25,401). Japan’s total arrivals for the month fell 5.0% to about 3.1 million.
The year so far
From January to September 2026, Japan received about 277,700 visitors from India, up 19.0% on the same period last year. Total arrivals from all countries were about 30.7 million, down 2.9%.
| Month (2026) | Arrivals from India | Change on 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| March | 41,438 | +25.7% |
| April | 41,866 | +12.1% |
| May | 56,551 | +31.4% |
| June | 36,062 | +26.0% |
| July | 20,284 | +10.9% |
| August | 19,500 (estimate) | +4.7% |
| September | 27,600 (estimate) | +8.7% |
May was the busiest month for Indian visitors, in line with the Indian summer holidays. Growth has slowed since July, but every month this year has been higher than the same month in 2025. JNTO marks the August and September figures as estimates, so they may be revised.
For context, India sent 315,062 visitors to Japan in the whole of 2025. At this year’s pace, the 2026 total is on course to pass that.
Entry reminder for Indian travellers
Indian passport holders need a visa for Japan. Our visa tracker has the current eVISA and fee details from the Embassy of Japan in India.
What it means for agents
Japan demand from India held up through a year in which overall arrivals fell. October to December has traditionally been strong (autumn leaves, then winter), and Air India’s Delhi–Osaka flights from February 2027 will add capacity. Agents should plan visa timelines early for the cherry-blossom season.
